Every Wednesday morning, community members and entrepreneurs from Fargo/Moorhead gather at StartupBREW Fargo, for a time to hear and explore the entrepreneurial journey. But some faces have become more than familiar, they are foundational–One of those faces is Carol Schwartz, who has been with us since StartupBREW was known as 1 Million Cups.

Rain or shine, Carol consistently shows up on Wednesday mornings, and we had the chance to chat with her about why StartupBREW remains a key part of her weekly routine.

How long have you been attending StartupBREW, and what keeps you coming back?

“I was first introduced to StartupBREW by my son, Lee Schwartz, when it was still a part of Million Cups and met at the FM Community Theater in Island Park. (I have been attending on a regular basis ever since as the venue changed from place to place.) I remember hearing the presentation by Dorothy of the famous Dot’s Pretzels during that time. She left an impression on me. “

What role has StartupBREW played in your personal or professional life?

“I no longer have a “professional” life, but the Wednesday morning meetings with StartupBREW have become an important part of my weekly activities. I look forward to hearing the presenters and learning about what’s happening in and around Fargo.  It helps me be “in the know.””

Have you made any meaningful connections or collaborations through StartupBREW?

“I have gotten to know a few of the regulars who come to the meetings and enjoy meeting those sitting near me.   And Roger seems to keep “attendance” and notices when we are missing.   I enjoy visiting with him.”

How would you describe the StartupBREW community to someone who’s never been?

“I encourage friends and neighbors to give StartupBrew a try as it’s a unique opportunity to step “outside the box” for folks of my age and learn what’s new and up and coming in the community.”

Why do you think gatherings like StartupBREW are important for a community?

“It’s such a wonderful networking tool for those who are embarking on new ventures or want to hear about what others are doing.  It provides avenues for partnerships, financing, and other support.”

What’s your favorite part of a typical StartupBREW morning?

“The coffee, of course!  I like the way the coffee is provided now and enjoy visiting with the nonprofit that is pouring for the day and learning more about their mission. I am also always inspired and usually amazed at the talent and ambition demonstrated by the presenters, and continue to learn something new every week. It’s uplifting and a boost to my midweek.”
Carol’s story shows that StartupBREW isn’t just about startups—it’s about stories. It’s about staying connected, being curious, and building community across generations. Whether you’re launching your first idea or simply showing up for the coffee and connection, there’s a place for you here. Just ask Carol.
