John Machacek, Senior Vice President of Finance & Entrepreneurial Development at the Greater Fargo-Moorhead EDC, has announced he is running for Mayor of Fargo in 2030.
“Some people have asked if I’d be running sooner,” Machacek said. “But this way by the time I run, people will be able to say and spell my last name.”
Among the key factors to Machacek’s platform will be a city-wide encouragement for more sweater vests, nice shoes, and nachos. He hopes to implement this initiative through creating mandatory weekly celebrations like Sweater Vest Fridays and Nacho Tuesdays.
“Sweater vests, cool hair, nice shoes, nachos…these are the important things to me,” Machacek said, sporting his own blue sweater vest.
His campaign may also include city-branded sweater vests and loafers.
When asked how he will continue to build Fargo up to be a better city, he said: “The city is already pretty darn great.”
Locals who know John Machacek, fondly known as Johnny Mach or Johnny Mach Speed, expressed enthusiasm at his announcement – regardless of it being 15 years down the road.
“I can’t wait to see what John will do for the city of Fargo,” said Annika Nynas, event planner for Emerging Prairie. “Now all we have to do is wait.”
